The Cherry Head Red-footed Tortoise is a striking color morph of Chelonoidis carbonaria originating from the savanna grasslands near the Venezuela-Brazil border. Characterized by vivid cherry-red to orange facial and leg coloration, this morph is prized for its particularly bright and contrasting appearance compared to typical Red-footed Tortoises. Long-lived and personable, they become cherished companions.
Care Notes
Requires a spacious outdoor enclosure or large indoor vivarium. For adults, a minimum 4'x8' footprint is recommended. A basking zone of 90–95°F is essential, provided by a heat lamp or mercury vapor bulb. UVB lighting (10.0+ output) is critical for proper calcium metabolism if kept indoors. High ambient humidity (60–80%) is needed for shell health — a humid hide or regular misting is recommended. Substrate should be 6"+ deep for natural burrowing. Diet consists of 70% leafy greens and grasses, 20% fruit (limited — can cause digestive upset if overused), and 10% protein sources (earthworms, occasional moistened dog food). Supplement calcium and vitamins 2–3x weekly.
