About Cichlasoma dimerus

A robust, oval-bodied cichlid native to the subtropical rivers of Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. Distinguished from most cichlids by its remarkable tolerance for cooler water temperatures, making it uniquely suitable for unheated aquariums in temperate climates. Dominant males develop a subtle nuchal hump and attractive blue-green iridescent scaling.

Care Notes

One of the most cold-tolerant cichlids available — thrives at 65–72°F without a heater in temperate rooms. Monogamous pairs form strong bonds and become attentive substrate spawners; provide flat rocks or broad surfaces for egg laying. Requires a 55+ gallon aquarium to accommodate male growth. Accepts a wide diet: pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Aggressively defends territory and fry.
