About Gymnogeophagus pseudolabiatus

Gymnogeophagus pseudolabiatus is a close relative of G. labiatus, sharing the eartheater lifestyle but with notably thinner lips ("pseudo" = false, "labiatus" = lipped). Males develop attractive coloration with metallic blue-green highlights and a slight nuchal hump at maturity. Native to the cooler subtropical rivers of Paraguay and northern Argentina.

Care Notes

Care requirements closely mirror G. labiatus. Provide a fine sand substrate for natural sifting behavior, and keep in cooler water conditions (65–76°F optimal). Best maintained in groups to reduce aggression. Feeds readily on sinking pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetable matter. A hardy, adaptable species once established. Suitable for a large community with other South American cichlids and robust characins.
