California Kingsnake (Lampropeltis californiae)
The California kingsnake is one of the best first snakes there is. Hardy, reliable feeders, forgiving of beginner mistakes, and a manageable adult size that never outgrows a reasonable enclosure. They come in a wide range of captive-bred morphs — banded, striped, albino, and combinations of all three.
The name is literal: kingsnakes eat other snakes. House them singly — that instinct does not switch off in captivity.
