About the species
Chelonoidis carbonarius is one of the best tortoises for a first-time keeper. Unlike Mediterranean species, red-foots are humid-tolerant and omnivorous rather than strict grazers, which makes their diet considerably more forgiving — greens, weeds, flowers, fruit, and occasional protein.
They're also genuinely personable. Red-foots tend to be curious and food-motivated rather than shy, and many keepers find them more interactive than other tortoises.
Plan for the long haul: adults reach 10–14 inches and can live 40–50 years. Hatchlings do well indoors in a large tub or tortoise table with a humid hide and a basking spot, then graduate to progressively larger enclosures as they grow.
